Paper and the Environment - Knowledge for Selling, Buying and Debate

This course is run in partnership with the Paper Industry Charitable Trust

Upcoming Courses in 2020

PEC FS02 in Spring 2020 - date to be announced at The Paper Trail in Hemel Hempstead

Venue

The Paper Trail

Frogmore Paper Mill is the world’s oldest mechanised paper mill – the birthplace of paper’s industrial revolution. Today it is still a working paper mill producing around 100 tonnes of specialist grade paper every year on historic paper machines.

The Apsley Paper Trail charity operates the site in order to conserve its unique history for the benefit of the public and future generations.  The site is actually owned by Dacorum Borough Council but it is leased to  the Apsley Paper Trail charity for 150 years.

The charity owns all the equipment inside the mill – specifically, two ‘fourdrinier’ paper machines that are each well over 100 years old – plus all the associated production equipment.  In 2008 the charity was able to covert the two old store sheds (1880 and 1924) at the southern end of the mill site into a purpose built, heated visitor centre incorporating a cafe, shop, exhibition hall, gallery and large  meeting room with financial support form the Heritage Lottery Fund. Here we can welcome visitors, explain the fascinating history of paper, demonstrate hand papermaking and letterpress printing and set out on a guided tour of the mill and its historic equipment.

Objective of the Course

The objective of the course is not to load delegates with masses of paper and the environment data and stats. This is all usually available from delegates’ own company resources or from trade bodies .(Delegates will however leave with a useful resources pack on main environmental issues in forestry, paper making, merchanting, printing and recycling.)

The key objective of the course is to give delegates a much greater understanding of the key environmental issues as they relate to how suppliers/customers/pressure groups/colleagues and even family and friends view paper in an environmental context. Delegates will leave with greater confidence in dealing with objections or indeed using environmental arguments in active selling or buying.

Delegates will be invited to actively contribute to the structure of the day and share experiences and solutions with the moderator and each other. You are encouraged to bring examples of what has worked for you, what problems you have encountered. Time willing, we will create roll play with “good cop, bad cop” to see how the understanding can work in practice.
